MAKING A GOOD SCRIPT GREAT/SHAPING THE STORY AND EXPLORING THE THEME

Als Highlight des Jahres konnten wir die Grande Dame des Script Consulting Linda Seger für einen Vortrag und zwei Seminare im Juni in Wien gewinnen.

Linda Seger, die ja als Begründerin des Script-Consulting gilt, wurde vor allem bekannt durch neun Bestseller der Drehbuchliteratur wie etwa Making a Good Script Great, Creating Unforgettable Characters, oder Writing Subtext. Sie hat sich in den letzten rund 30 Jahren zu einer der einflussreichsten und meistbeschäftigten Dramaturginnen entwickelt und unter anderem mit Peter Jackson oder Roland Emmerich zusammen gearbeitet. Produktionen wie The Long Walk Home, The Neverending Story II, Luther, Romero und kürzlich auch die schwedisch-dänische TV Serie The Bridge hat sie dramaturgisch begleitet.

In ihrem Vortrag legt sie den Fokus auf den Prozess des kreativen Schreibens und das Arbeiten im Team mit DramaturgInnen, RegisseurInnen, ProduzentInnen und RedakteurInnen.

Das zweitägige Scriptwriting Seminar wird die Entwicklung der Geschichte, die Struktur, das Thema und die Visualisierung behandeln und am zweiten Tag einen Schwerpunkt auf die Entwicklung der Figuren legen.

Das zusätzliche eintägige Script Consulting Seminar wird die Arbeit der DramaturgInnen beleuchtet: von der Analyse des Stoffes, der Strategien der Problembehandlung bis zur Gesprächsführung mit AutorInnen und den Herausforderungen, die sich aus der engen Zusammenarbeit ergeben können. (Der Besuch des 1. Seminars ist dafür Voraussetzung)

Der Vortrag steht der gesamten Filmbranche offen, die Seminare wenden sich speziell an DrehbuchautorInnen, DramaturgInnen, RegisseurInnen, ProduzentInnen und FernsehredakteurInnen.

In any creative endeavor, a knowledge of craft by itself is simply not enough. While craft may provide structural tools, it does not address the most basic and universal element of all artistic work – the creative process.

In her seminar Linda Seger teaches not just to awaken creativity but explains the process of being a creative thinker within the context of screenwriting. Based on her highly popular collection of screenwriting books she combines current theories of creativity with the practices of screenwriting, focusing on ways in which screenwriters can learn to think and work more creatively.

This lecture, the introductory opening event to her seminars is open to participants of the whole filmindustry. Linda Seger talks about the many ways of working as a creative screenwriter and the crafts that are needed to be successful.
In addition to that she goes deeper into the screenwriting process – from the initial concept to the final rewrite – providing specific methods that will help craft tighter, stronger, and more saleable scripts.
Therefore she analyses the teamwork between the writers, producers and script consulters and gives guidance for improving cooperations.

Screenwriting Seminar

DAY 1: Story, Structure, Theme and Images
Fr, 19. Juni 2015, 10.00 – 17.00 Uhr

A great movie is a story told well with a beginning, middle, and end, which is meaningful for the audience. The writer shapes the story and expresses the theme through the events of the story, through the characters and through images. The seminar will help to develop the skills for telling a compelling and dramatic story and to articulate the skills you know intuitively.
Above that, Linda Seger will show how to use images as metaphors making the film more visual and expressing the theme with “showing“, not telling.

DAY 2: Character
Sa, 20. Juni 2015, 10.00 – 17.00 Uhr

Writing a successful screenplay requires an understanding of character creation as well as character development. A great movie reveals character. Characters add direction and dimension to a film. Linda Seger will look at the motivation of the protagonist, the character goals, how to create conflict and at the transformation of the character. Creating the character means researching the character: context, culture, creating details (attitudes, values, emotions), developing backstory (physiology, sociology, psychology), and establishing personality and behavior.

Der Vortrag und das Scriptwriting Seminar sind dafür Voraussetzung

Working closely with the writer, the script editor gives feedback on the quality of their work and is suggesting improvements that can be made or ensuring practical issues like show continuity and correct running time. This Seminar will explore the work of the Script Consultant, including “How to Write a Report,” and “How to Work With Writers Effectively.” But it’s not enough to be right about the problems. A script consultant also needs to be constructive and diplomatic and should be familiar with the needs and working principles of the screenwriter.
