Family Entertainment wird in anderen Ländern groß geschrieben, in Österreich aber noch eher stiefmütterlich behandelt. Kinder-, Jugend- und Familienfilme sind in Österreich oft schwierig zu finanzieren, es wird sowohl an der künstlerischen Qualität als auch am Marktpotenzial gezweifelt. Wir konnten einen der erfahrensten Vertreter des Family Entertainment für 3 Tage nach Wien einladen: Der Drehbuchautor Philip LaZebnik wird eine Brandrede zur Bedeutung des Family Entertainment halten (17.11.22). Er hat langjährige Erfahrung sowohl in den USA (Walt Disney, Dreamworks etc) als auch in Europa. Am 18.11.22 wird er in einer mehrstündigen Masterclass zur story creation und delevelopment process die drei Geheimnisse Walt Disneys verraten. Und am 19.11.22 gibt LaZebnik im Rahmen des Mentoring Programms des Drehbuchwettbewerbs Heldinnen in Serie – next generation, das vom Drehbuchforum Wien organisiert wird, einen Workshop für die Preisträger*innen, bei dem sie Feedback zu ihren Projekten erhalten.

An overview of the importance and centrality of family entertainment as seen through the eyes of the screenwriter of Pocahontas, Mulan and Prince of Egypt. Philip LaZebnik will also discuss his experiences at Disney, DreamWorks and his years working as a screenwriter in Europe – the similarities and the differences.

Anschließend laden wir zu einem Glas Wein ins Foyer.

Three Secrets of Walt Disney (Masterclass with Philip LaZebnik)

Walt Disney had three secrets for choosing a story. Philip LaZebnik will now pass these secrets on to you, using them as a basis for a discussion of the story creation and development process. In addition, he will talk about his approach to story structure and then conduct an interactive workshop with the participants in which you will come up with your own stories. Philip LaZebnik

has written numerous television episodes and motion picture screenplays in the USA and Europe. His screenwriting credits include Disney’s Pocahontas and Mulan, and DreamWorks’ The Prince of Egypt and The Road to El Dorado. He was also a writer for several television series, including Wings, Star Trek: the Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Mr. LaZebnik now lives in Denmark, where he has written numerous movies and television shows throughout Europe and the U.S., including the animated features Asterix and the Vikings and Asterix and the Domain of the Gods. He wrote the book for the live musical theatrical version of The Prince of Egypt with songs by Stephen Schwartz, which played in London’s West End at the Dominion Theatre and is coming to the US next year. Most recently he co-wrote the book for the live theatrical musical Snow White and Me, which is now playing in Brno, Czech Republic, with future productions throughout Europe and the US. He is also currently co-writing the animated feature adaptation of the musical.
